Hysteroscopy is a method of examining the inside of your uterus using a thin medical instrument called a hysteroscope. The hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the cervix uteri and cervical portio. Hysteroscopy is used to diagnose pathological conditions in the uterine cavity and can also be utilised to treat these conditions surgically.
What are the indications for hysteroscopy?
- Suspected uterine abnormalities, fibroids, adhesions
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
- Irregular periods
- Bleeding after menopause
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Infertility
Hysteroscopy is recommended in the treatment of infertility when clinical, ultrasound or HSGa findings suggest changes in the uterine cavity.
